Phlebitis

What is Phlebitis?

Phlebitis or Superficial Thrombophlebitis is a condition caused by inflammation of a vein or vein segment. The inflammation results from trapped or clotted blood in a superficial vein (any vein outside a muscle) usually a varicose vein. While phlebitis tends to occur in superficial veins of the leg, it can also occur in the arms, shoulder or chest veins.

Common causes of Phlebitis include:
  • Infection
  • Varicose Veins
  • Pregnancy
  • Clotting Disorders
  • Being stationary for long periods of time

Symptoms...

The usual symptoms of phlebitis include swelling‚ redness‚ warmth‚ tenderness and a hardening of the vein.

Treatment...

Fortunately‚ phlebitis usually resolves by itself in 2–3 weeks. If treatment is needed it may include aspiration of the clot and the use of compression hose, bandages and aspirin. In rare cases‚ complications can include gangrene‚ septic shock‚ and pulmonary embolism. If you display symptoms‚ it is best to contact your physician for a professional diagnosis. If you have symptoms within the limb such as paleness‚ cold—or you develop a fever—contact a physician immediately.
