What is Phlebitis (Superficial Thrombophlebitis)? Leg Pain and Symptoms

Definition, Symptoms, and Treatment

Phlebitis, or superficial thrombophlebitis, is the inflammation of a vein or a segment of a vein. Phlebitis is often accompanied by clotting, which causes the inflammation. It occurs in superficial (outside the muscle) veins when blood is trapped or clotted. This is commonly a varicose vein, both superficial and not functioning correctly. While it tends to occur in the leg, phlebitis can also occur in superficial veins of the arms, shoulder and chest.

Phlebitis Treatment at Our Vein Clinic

In most cases, phlebitis will resolve itself in 2 to 3 weeks, which is fortunate. But some cases will require treatment, which may include aspiration of the clot and the use of compression stockings, as well as NSAIDs (such as, Ibuprofen, Motrin and Aspirin). In rare instances, phlebitis complications can include gangrene, septic shock and pulmonary embolism, all of which are quite serious and potentially life-threatening.

Symptoms of Superficial Thrombophlebitis and Phlebitis That Require Treatment

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of phlebitis, you’re advised to contact your physicians for a professional medical diagnosis, because phlebitis can be serious. If you are experiencing paleness or coldness in the limb, or if you develop a fever, contact a physician immediately.
